The Grade 1 listed hotel opened in 1780. The building stood empty for many years and fell into disrepair though the original ballroom remained in immaculate condition behind locked doors, having been heated by the council.
Cooper & Hall made several site visits to fully understand the scope of the project in preparing detailed and accurate Bills of Quantities, working closely with the contractor on numerous changes to major building works, which had to remain sympathetic to the grand hotel.
The natural water springs – which Buxton is famous for – run under the basement of the hotel. The purity of the springs is protected so the water could not be contaminated during building works.
