Kieron Harvey hasn’t looked back since leaving teaching for the world of quantity surveying

It is fast approaching five years since I made the decision to move away from my previous career in teaching and start my journey towards becoming a Quantity Surveyor – and I could never have predicted how much of a steep learning curve it would be.

Since joining Cooper & Hall in 2018, I have completed my master’s degree through the distance learning programme at Northumbria University. Juggling a full-time job with my university studies wasn’t easy, but through careful management of my time and the prioritising of workload I was able to successfully navigate through this period and complete the master’s degree to the standard I had hoped. Everyone at C&H was extremely supportive throughout; not only offering their knowledge and expertise across a range of topics, but also allowing me time to focus on my studies as and when I needed it.

I am now a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor having been promoted from my previous positions as trainee QS and assistant QS. Last year, I started the next chapter of my professional development by beginning the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) in order to become a Chartered Surveyor. Achieving this is not only my aim but it is also actively encouraged by C&H as a natural step in my professional progression.

This year I have taken on the responsibility of heading up the company’s Quality Assurance (QA) commitment along with another colleague. This has given me a unique perspective of how the company is run and provided me with a platform to discuss, not only my own professional development, but also my ideas surrounding the day-to-day organisation of the company, as well as the direction the company is moving in as a whole.

C&H has given me a fantastic foundation in terms of support and experiences. I have performed a variety of pre-contract, post-contract and PQS roles, across a wide range of projects and have learnt so much in a relatively short length of time. I look forward to what lies ahead for me, and the company, and know that I will be supported every step of the way.
